American Specialty Health Moves National Corporate Headquarters to Carmel

Indiana Governor Mike Pence joined Mayor Jim Brainard to announce that American Specialty Health Incorporated (ASH) would be establishing its national corporate headquarters in Carmel and employing about 675 employees there by 2016. ASH co-founder, Chairman, and CEO George DeVries delivered the news with Governor Pence and Mayor Brainard from the new ASH offices located at Hamilton Crossing III in Carmel.

ASH is one of the nation’s premier, independent, and privately-held health service companies providing fitness programs, population health programs, and specialty health management to health plans, employer groups, and insurance carriers nationwide. The California company, launched more than 25 years ago, now employs over 1,000 people. The expansion to Carmel has now taken place and hiring of all the new employees is well underway.

“We have selected Carmel as the site of our national corporate headquarters for a variety of reasons,” said ASH ‘s George DeVries. “First, ASH has grown from a California company into a national company, and Carmel provides a central location with proximity to our clients across the nation. Additionally, the state of Indiana has a strong business climate and the cost of doing business is lower. Also, the city of Carmel offers an affordable, family-oriented place for our employees to live and work.”

The new Carmel office will employ about 300 people by the end of 2014, growing to approximately 675 employees by 2016. DeVries said he anticipates that 30-50 jobs at the new office will be filled by current employees from the San Diego and Dallas operations centers. The remainder of the jobs will be filled through recruitment in the Carmel/Indianapolis region.

In its initial phase, the new headquarters will occupy 72,693 square-feet of office space on four floors of the Hamilton Crossing III building. ASH also has leased 16.362 square-feet of additional space at the Carmel Tech Center on Hancock Street in Carmel. The offices have undergone some renovation and are expected to be up and running completely over the course of the next few months.

“We are pleased to welcome ASH’s corporate headquarters to our community,” said Mayor Brainard. “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone involved in this decision during the past several months. Carmel has the ability to attract great companies such as ASH because of our high quality of life created by a strong sense of community, an excellent school system, safe neighborhoods, an expanding park system, a variety of cultural amenities, and a first-rate professional work force. The national awards and recognition that ASH has received over the years show it to be an excellent place to work. This is the type of employer we like to bring to Carmel.”

DeVries stated that the opening of the new Carmel office is part of a five-year strategic plan that called for ASH to develop multiple offices in three distinct geographic regions nationally and split its operations, customer service, and health coaching into equally-sized teams. This strategy provides ASH with operational redundancy to support disaster recovery planning.

“As a national health services organization serving 34 million members, we felt it prudent to be prepared for any type of natural disaster,” said DeVries. “We concluded that, due to the size and national scope of our business, we could best ensure uninterrupted service if we established three geographically separate office locations.”

ASH will maintain its office in San Diego, which has been its corporate office location for 25 years. The company opened a Southlake (Dallas), TX office in July 2012 and anticipates a June 2014 grand opening for Carmel. DeVries said the Carmel and San Diego offices will host “duplicate data centers for redundancy and business resumption.” In 2012, ASH also opened a health technology innovation center with the University of South Carolina’s Innovista incubator in Columbia, SC.

ASH operates 13 subsidiaries that offer their programs. Privately held, ASH reported revenue of $221 million last year, up 64 percent from 2009 when the company first appeared on the Inc. 5000 list of the country’s fastest-growing businesses. Recently, ASH was named to the Inc. 5000 list for the fifth year in a row. For more information about ASH or jobs at ASH, visit Follow them on LinkedIn or Twitter at @ASHCompanies.

Carmel has experienced tremendous business growth this year, attracting company expansions or relocations, which should result in an estimated increase of more than 3,300 jobs in the next five years. This is almost a six percent increase in Carmel’s employment base. In addition to the ASH relocation of its corporate headquarters, the city also welcomed Next Gear Capital, Baldwin & Lyons, GEICO and Polleo Systems, to mention a few.
